What does ezIcon Generator do?

The Story Behind EZIcon Generator
EZIcon Generator began with the need for custom icons for the WebExeBuilder project. It evolved into a full-scale proof-of-concept app. Most of EZIcon Generator was architected within Google AI Studio using Nano Banana. After the initial build, the code was refined to integrate local API functions and WebExeBuilder-specific features.
Why a Desktop App?
This was built as a local Windows application for several reasons:
  1. Privacy & Security: Code and API keys remain local and are never shared.
  2. No Subscriptions: Using one's own API key avoids monthly service fees. Users only deal with Google’s usage rates.
  3. Efficiency: No server lag or hosting fees—just a fast, local experience.

The "ezIcon Generator" Story
From a Single Icon to a Full Proof of Concept
This project was a blast to build! It actually started with a very simple need: I just wanted some custom icons for my other project, WebExeBuilder.
To solve that, I fired up a new Google AI project using Nano, and the ezIcon Generator was born. What started as a utility tool worked so well that I decided to use it as a full Proof of Concept (PoC) app.
The Workflow:
  • Rapid Prototyping: The core logic was built almost entirely within Google AI Studio.
  • The Bridge: I transitioned the AI-generated code into a WebExeBuilder project.
  • Custom Refinement: I manually edited the code to integrate specialized WebExeBuilder functions and local API calls.
It’s been a great exercise in seeing how quickly you can go from an AI prompt to a functional, locally-integrated desktop executable!

Why a Windows App Instead of a Web Tool?
I chose to build this as a desktop application for several key reasons. First, I personally prefer the stability of Windows apps. Beyond that, moving away from a server-based model means zero hosting fees and better protection for the application's core code. Because it runs locally, your data stays private. This setup also allows you to use your own Google API keys, which are stored securely on your machine and never shared. By removing myself as the "middleman" for AI processing, I don’t have to charge you a monthly subscription. You simply pay Google directly for the exact amount of AI resources you consume.

Q. Is an API key required to run the software?

A. It depends on how it is used. An API key is not needed for the core features, such as using built-in icon generators, personal images, or existing icons. An API key is only necessary to use the Google Gemini AI prompt feature.
Q. Is there a free version available?
A. Absolutely. There is a full freeware version available.

If EZIcon Generator becomes a staple in your workflow, purchasing the Professional Edition is a great way to show your support. The Pro version adds essential workflow features like saving and loading projects, along with automatic backups during image exports. It’s also the only version that lets you share project files with your team or friends. Otherwise, you get the same powerful generation features in both editions!

Getting Started with Google AI Keys
If you want to dive into the AI features, you’ll need a "digital pass" from Google called an API key.
  1. Head over to aistudio.google.com.
  2. Grab your key and paste it into the app's configuration area.
  3. Regional Note: If you are in the UK or EEA, Google’s free tier might not be available due to local regulations, so a paid tier is likely necessary.
Don't let "paid" scare you because t's very affordable. Even with my constant testing and re-generating icons during development, I've never spent more than $20 in a single month. You can even set your own hard budget limits in the Google dashboard. And remember: if you don’t need the AI, you don’t need a key!
